"Walk To End Alzheimer's"

For those who may not be aware, November is National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness & National Family Caregivers Month. Since its inception in 1983, by President Ronald Regan, the number of Americans diagnosed with this heartbreaking disease has more than doubled today to 5.4 million from 2 million (alz.org). When becoming acquainted with individuals for the first time, and the topic of occupation arises, I am often met with the same question: "What made you want to do that?" My immediate reply is, "Well, truthfully, it chose me..."
I then share the story of how my grandmother, Mae Eva Howell, was diagnosed with Dementia (of which Alzheimer's Disease is the most common form). Thankfully though, my large family was able to work in shifts to provide her at-home care. My mother and I drove to Gainesville every weekend in the final months to assist in this work and to simply be present...to just be near her, to be an inexplicably familiar comfort...even when she ultimately couldn't remember our names...Yet, it was the work I found myself engaged in -- immediately following her demise -- that would align me with my destiny...
